RSS for AAUW Webmanagers

In the fall of 2007, www.aauw.org changed to a site that supports RSS feeds. With the launch of AAUW DIALog earlier this year, more and more AAUW content is "syndicated" and is available to individuals through tools known as "aggregators." Instead of "checking back often," you can now have AAUW headlines delivered to you -- find out about the important changes on www.aauw.org without spending time checking all your favorite pages.

This also has implications for webmanagers of other AAUW related sites -- states and branches. Your site can "republish" the AAUW headlines without your having to copy the content from www.aauw.org. Set things up once, and then as new content is posted on the national site, the state and branch sites can be updated automatically.

This webinar, hosted by Nancy Shoemaker, will

  • introduce RSS and how it is used by individuals
  • explain how to repost headlines on "traditional" websites using JavaScript
  • give some examples of reposting headlines with "nontraditional" sites (e.g. blogger, WordPress)
  • review the key feeds provided by AAUW

Homework

While we will try to "start at the beginning" and introduce the notion of RSS, you may want to review some of this information:

RSS in Plain English

This short, well-done video presents from Common Craft the idea of "RSS" in a way that may help those new to the concept understand its importance.

Using RSS to keep up with your favorite sites

A paper from AAUW NC that was recommended in the Communications section of the spring 2008 Leadership DVD series
This is a slide show demonstrating how to personalize your Google home page to show AAUW headlines. If you use Yahoo or another portal as your home page, it has similar tools. Start on slide 8 (see the arrows in the upper right) to get to the meat of adding AAUW headlines to your home page.

Using RSS to repost information on another site

Since AAUW is using RSS on www.aauw.org, it is possible to "repost" AAUW headlines on branch/state sites. For example, see

There are other ways to do this (particularly if you're using a system like blogger), but the solution those branches used is available to anyone. See p3k.org/rss along with the links at www.aauw.org/rss if you want to explore before we discuss the technique in the webinar.
